Rediscovering Antonio Salieri (1750-1825)

Rediscovering Antonio Salieri (1750-1825)
One of the most influential musical personalities in Viennese musical life in the 18th and 19th centuries, Salieri’s character became extremely popular thanks to the film Amadeus, where the composer was interpreted by F. Murray Abraham. By going beyond the myth of Salieri’s rivalry with Mozart, Salieri’s music is now emerging under a new light, finally being recognized for its importance in the course of music history.
With May 7, 2025 marking the bicentenary of Salieri’s death, C Major Entertainment and Unitel present four unmissable programs to rediscover the Italian composer

Kublai Khan
Winner of the International Opera Awards 2024 in the category „Rediscovered Work”
World premiere of the original Italian version in a play version by Martin G. Berger & Philipp Amelungsen
Carlo Lepore, Lauranne Oliva, Alasdair Kent, Marie Lys, Arnold Schoenberg Chor
Les Talens Lyriques conducted by Christophe Rousset
This acclaimed production sees Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques presenting the first performance of Antonio Salieri’s Cublai, gran kan de’ Tartari (Kublai Khan), in the original Italian version in a new production directed by Martin G Berger at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. A fine cast brought Salieri’s underappreciated writing to life with a range of notable and memorable voices, while Christophe Rousset has long championed Salieri’s operas in an effort to restore the misunderstood composer’s works to their rightful place. This production gives an unconventional and fresh look on a underestimated composer.
